Although a return to posting on this platform is planned for this new year, it would be remiss to resume weekend+notes without addressing the devastating fires in California. The striking images flooding the news paint horrific scenes of neighborhoods wiped off the map, businesses left in piles of powdery ashes and a ghostly appearance more fitting of a movie set.

Stories and video documenting harrowing escapes, thick bands of billowing smoke rising from the hillsides and first responders racing to combat ravaging flames devouring the landscape unfold as dazed residents and the world watch in disbelief and deep sorrow.

So many catastrophic events around the globe weigh heavily as we turn the page on another year searching for a silver lining amidst the loss and it is inspiring to see communities pull together, to witness the individual weariness, strength and gratitude of those facing unimaginable challenges choosing to focus on and move forward with what is most important.

The snowfall that recently wrapped our area in fluffy frosty layers could not be more of a contrast to the fiery backdrops in Los Angeles. Opposite coasts experiencing vastly different terrains... one encased in extreme heat, the other in an inviting warmth despite a bitter winter chill. Only the blazing embers floating in raging Santa Ana winds and the scintillating flakes slicing the Mid-Atlantic air mark a sole parallel - one of mini fireworks piercing the sky.

At a time when holiday celebrations transition to resolutions, personal goals and organization, a January refresh certainly pivots to an unexpected meaning for those living in the affected zones.

Here is a list of a few ways to support the city.

Sending love to everyone impacted by the heartbreaking destruction out west.

xx
